Attending The Nutcracker Ballet

For a limited time: Discount Tickets are available to Ballet San Jose and San Francisco's productions of The Nutcracker. CLICK HERE to view performances nationwide.

There are a number of things I've wanted to do for years... Attend an opera, the Gilroy Garlic Festival, dine at Buchon Bistro (owned by renowned Chef and Restaurateur Thomas Keller of the French Laundry), attend the Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Festival and experience The Nutcracker Ballet. I have never been to the ballet before but am certain I will love it. Life is short and I'm not putting it off any longer!

To be honest I had no idea what The Nutcracker is even about until I read about it online last night. In brief it is a two act, Russian ballet, based on a little girl's dream and performed to the music of Tchaikovsky. Each year I see the tv commercials and think to myself it looks beautiful and I'd love to go. So out of curiosity and partly because I want to support the arts, I just purchased a ticket and will soon see my first ballet!

The Nutcracker is playing in both San Jose and San Francisco and both are offering some very nice discounted ticket options. Don't wait to purchase. The San Francisco promotion ends tomorrow (Sunday) Night at 11:59 PM.

The Nutcracker (Dennis Nahat - Artistic Director) is playing in San Jose from December 11th through December 26th at the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts located downtown at 255 Almaden Blvd., San Jose, CA.

In San Jose standard ticket prices range from $30-$100 each.

If you're on a budget there are three "Family Series" matinee shows where the tickets are reduced to $16-$60. The main reason the cost is lowered is because the ballet is performed to a recorded score, meaning the music isn't from a live symphony. In the full priced shows the Symphony Silicon Valley accompanies the dancers. Either way, I'm sure it will be wonderful.

And if you live in San Francisco you can enjoy Artistic Director Helgi Tomasson's production of The Nutcracker with the score performed live by the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra. Here is a great article on Red Tricycle about what it's like attending The Nutcracker, especially with kids: Insider’s Guide to the San Francisco Ballet’s Nutcracker

In San Francisco The Nutcracker runs from December 9th through the 27th at the War Memorial Opera House located at 301 Van Ness Avenue San Francisco, CA.

In San Francisco ticket prices range from $32 to $249 each.

There are a limited number of 40% off discounted tickets available for the December 14th through 16th  Matinee Performances. Don't wait to order them! This offer expires tomorrow, (Sunday) December 12 at 11:59pm.

Orchestra Seating $49
Dress Circle Seating $39

I'm prepared to be enchanted! And have to say now that I understand what The Nutcracker is about I can't help but wonder if any couples ever have Nutcracker themed weddings around the holidays... It could be amazing.... There could be snow falling during the ceremony (which would look so cool on a video), little nutcracker name cards, a sugar plum dessert buffet and if you don't want to have a traditional first dance, have a danseur (male) and ballerina (female), in costume, perform a piece from the ballet.
